On the 29th of May 1994, Kenneth Adrian Louise Fuentes was born and now, this sixteen year old guy is definitely on his way to greatness.

Fuentes is currently a point guard in JCSGO’s Roaring Lions. “He’s a natural point guard,” expressed Mr. Darwin dela Torre, the team’s coach.

Kenneth’s hobbies are playing basketball and the game called, “CHARGE!” His humor came out when he stated that he wants to become a world champion on that game.

Though he is basketball player, his dream is to finish college at Ateneo de Manila University and become a Physics teacher. His dream proves that he has more than just good looks.

This natural point guard does not have his apple of the eye right now but he is looking for a cute, understanding, pretty, jolly, chubby and kind girl.

So better apply now before he finds one. I'm now in line.

Everyone has this immediate thought of Physics as a hard subject. This teacher, however, proved all of us wrong.

It was the first day of classes and JCA seniors can't help but worry, especially now that they have Physics as a subject. Rumors started to circulate about how hard it is and to make it worse, they thought that their new Physics teacher is strict - as in very strict.

But all their "theories" were proven incorrect once Mr. Wilfredo Adorio, Jr. entered the classroom and started talking.

At the age of 27, Mr. Adorio already has degrees in Physics and Nursing, and is currently taking up Master of Science in Nursing in a school in Manila.

You may ask yourself, "Why would someone be interested in a hard subject like Physics?" His answer was simply because it's fun to teach because it can be applied in our daily lives.

Being a new teacher, he has his own impressions of his students.

"Willing silang matuto," he said, obviously not disappointed with the openness of JCAians to learn new things from him.

At first look, one would think that he's not the approachable kind - maybe, a terror at that - but he showed it otherwise during his discussions, where he throws a couple of jokes here and there.

"Magaling magturo saka ayos yung mga jokes niya," one student said when asked about him.

Clearly, Mr. Adorio has made learning and studying Physics fun all at the same time. This has prompted fourth year students to ask for more come Physics time.

"Oh? Exam na pala?"

This is the prevailing response of JCAians when asked about the First Periodical Exams on August 10 - 12.

With a few days left before the quarterlies and projects stuffing their tight schedule, JCAians are still having problems managing their time.

"Di pa ako nagrereview kase hirap mag-manage ng time," junior Hena Ibatuan told In and Out.

The upcoming entrance exams spell double trouble for fourth year students, especially those who are in the thick of preparations for the University of the Philippines College Admissions Test on August 7 and 8.

"I'm striving to make my dream come true," said Alexandra Jessica Esponga of IV-Victorious. "That's why I have high hopes."

Back on track

After being scrapped last year from the Nutrition Month celebration, the Jingle Writing Contest is now back on track.

Group contestants from the different year levels have prepared their handmade instruments and wrote their compositions about the theme "Sa pagkaing tama at sapat, wastong timbang ni baby ang katapat."

Contestants are not too giddy about the tilt but rather, anxiety among students is building up.

"Nagcra-cram kami e," said IV-Victorious president Ima de Leon. "Kinakabahan kami."

Third year students, on the other hand, are all ready for the competition, according to Patricia Dioquino of III-Great.

"Okay na kami. Ready na yung song namin."

Practices and rehearsals are ongoing at presstime as contestants make a last-ditch effort to claim this year's top prize during the Nutrition Month culminating program at 2 p.m. today.

'First Clash' tix sell like hotcakes on Day 1

"The First Clash" is turning out to be a hot commodity.

Tickets to the basketball game pitting four JCA-based teams on Wednesday at the JCSGO Seed Dome have been selling like hotcakes since being released early morning today.

The activity, sponsored by the Supreme Student Government and supported by the Sports Club, the High School Department and the Grade School Department, will likewise serve as a pep rally for JCA's varsity teams, which will compete in the upcoming Season 4 of the Quezon City Athletic Association.

The JCA Roaring Cubs grade school varsity, mentored by coach Janmarck Fuerte, will meet a High School Freshman-Sophomore selection at 3:15 p.m. while the JCA Roaring Cubs high school varsity, under coach Darwin dela Torre, will lock horns with the retooled FaculTech Black Hawks at 4:15 p.m.

School Steward Ms. Cynthia Genon has cancelled all last subjects of the High School Department to let all JCAians witness the clash of these school-based hoop squads.

Meanwhile, the SSG, with the leadership of President Danielle Nakpil, is preparing side activities to add flavor to "The First Clash."

Tickets are available at Php 20.00 and could be bought from the SSG (high school) and the SPG (grade school).

An Angel in Disguise

Each year, new students meet new people with new faces and new personalities. They have to deal with the changes and adapt with the new environment they are now in. This kind of situation does not happen only to students but to educators as well.

This school year, the High School Faculty welcomed a lady with a refreshing beauty, Ms. Novafe Deticio. She is the new Citizenship Advancement Training (CAT) teacher of the fourth year students. And when students from the lower year levels learned that she's the new CAT commandant, they quickly thought that Ms. Deticio is a monster.

"The purpose of the CAT is not to torture the students but to build their character." This is her idea and outlook of what the CAT is all about.

And as her students always say, "She's more of an angel than a monster."

To trust in the Lord and to pursue their dreams are the things she wants the students to do. Like what all educaters say, "Mag-aral mabuti!" is her command.

Ms. Deticio did expect a lot from JCAians. And she admitted that unfortunately, not all students have met her expectations. "It really depends on the student," she commented.

Ma'am also expressed her concern for the students when she said that she wants to help them in some ways. She would love to have them build the character that they can bring even when they leave JCA.

"God called me to teach here," Ms. Deticio beamed.

That is what she believes and holds on to. She has had a lot of reasons for applying to be a teacher in JCA but she believes that the Lord's call made her splash into our world.

No wonder why her students don't call and see her as a monster nor a headache. For it is God's will that she is here.

Journ studes in deep training for upcoming confabs

After winning it all in the group contests of the National Schools Press Conference last year, the JCSGO Christian Academy Journalism Team sets its sights on topping the individual competitions of the annual gathering of campus journalists in the country.

To achieve this, the team, led by adviser Josiah Israel Albelda, has been in deep training in preparation for the Mini Press Conference it will be hosting on August 13.

A total of 11 public and private schools from Quezon City have confirmed their attendance in the activity.

Last year's champion, Don Alejandro Roces Sr. Science-Technology High School will be back to defend its crown while perennial contenders Quezon City High School, Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School and Carlos L. Albert High School will be there to give Roces a run for its money.

JCA, meanwhile, has had a dismal performance in its past two participations in the Mini Press Con, bagging only four awards last year.

The school sent only 10 scribes in the 2009 joust while the rest of the field brought at least 25 campus journalists with them.

This school year, JCA will go full throttle with 24 school scribes, photojournalists, cartoonists and radio broadcasters vying in the eight different contest categories.

Student trainers have been on hand to give members of the JCA Journ Team training. The list includes this writer, two-time NSPC winner Mychael Miravite, 2010 Copyreading and Headline Writing champ Sheena Sacdalan, and NSPC participants Aki Yatco and Reina Medina.

Freelance photographer Josh Albelda, likewise, will be part of the training team trying to erase the stigma of zero wins in photojourn contests last year.

"Bastusan, Bastos!"

Ito ang mga karaniwang sinasabi sa atin ng mga guro kapag "binabastos" natin sila. Ngunit, sa tingin mo, sino ba ang tunay na may sala?

May ilang fourth year students na hindi na kumikilala ng awtoridad, naghahari-harian at kung kumilos ay parang pinuno ng paaralan. Oo, hindi kumpleto ang hayskul ng hindi nagiging makulit o pasaway sa mga guro. Pero, wag naman sobra. Sobra sobra hanggang sa point na nakakainis na.

Ang ating mga guro ay tao din. Naiinis, naaasar at napupuno. Lalo na kapag nalaman nilang kung ano ano yung mga sinasabi mo sa likuran nila - lalong lalo na kung wala itong batayan at panay panghuhusga ang ibinibigay nila pag hindi nila naiibigan ang isang bagay.

Tao rin naman tayo. At siguro may batayan rin ang mga ito upang "bastusin" ang isang guro at sabihan nang kung anu-ano, pero responsibilidad ng isang estudyante na irespeto ang mga ito sa abot nang kanilang makakaya.

Kahit naman sino ang tanungin mo ay dapat nating isipin ang na tama ang bagay bago tayo magsalita o magbigay ng suhestyon ukol sa mga bagay-bagay.

Sa iyong tingin, dapat bang bastusin ang mga guro kahit may kamalian ito? Tandaan natin na hindi lahat ng bagay ay naaayon sa gusto niyong mangyari.

Konting isip naman mga kaibigan. Ang estudyante ay estudyante. Ang teacher ay teacher. Wala tayong karapatan magmataas. Ang problema, wala naman kasing binatbat. Wala na ngang sinabi, dumadaldal pa kahit wala namang alam.

Patuloy ang panggugulat ng mga taga-Kibbutz sa JCAians nang ipatupad ang isang polisiya kung saan ang pisong sukli mo ay pinapalitan ng isang pirasong candy.

"Bakit candy?" yan ang tanong na bumabagabag sa mga mag-aaral ng JCSGO Christian Academy.

Humingi ng tulong ang ilang mag-aaral sa Supreme Student Government (SSG) at ipinangako naman ng huli na titignan nila kung anong aksyon ang maaaring ibigay sa isyung ito.

"Pag-aaralan namin ito," ani Pangulong Danielle Nakpil. "Magbibigay kami ng mga suhestyon para malunasan ang ganitong problema."

Sa ngayon, kailangan munang magtiis ng JCAians sa kakaibang polisiyang ipinatutupad ng Kibbutz.

"Pwede ko bang ibayad sa jeep ang candy?" hindi-makapinawalang tanong ni Jonas Velez ng IV-Victorious.

Ayon naman kay Gina Dalmao, pinuno ng Kibbutz, ini-export sa ibang bansa ang mga barya kaya nauubusan nila ng piso.

"Talaga lang ah?" sabi ni Junie Peteros, na isa ring senior student.

UPDATE: Pumapayag ang Kibbutz na ipagpalit ang candy sa piso pag gagamiting pambili. Ito ay lubos na ikinatuwa ng mga mag-aaral.
